Ethereum Coin Mixer Tornado Cash is back on GitHub

The Ethereum Tornado Cash coin mixer is now back on the GitHub software hosting site.

The US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) last month blacklisted Tornado Cash, which allows users to send and receive Ethereum anonymously. US citizens are now banned from interacting with the app, which aggregates transactions to hide their origins.

GitHub, a website that allows developers to share code, removed the tool’s code from its platform hours after OFAC’s announcement.

But Ethereum developers today announced that the original code for the tool has returned to the popular site.

Decrypt confirmed that the Tornado Cash code was available for download but GitHub had not explained why it had put it back up as of this story.

Lead Ethereum developer Preston Van Loon broke the news on Twitter. He has previously said that “the code is the word and freedom of speech is a constitutional right that deserves to be protected.”

The Treasury Department said last month it had blacklisted Tornado Cash because criminals, including North Korea’s state-sponsored hacking group Lazarus Group, were using it to launder money. .

According to federal authorities, more than $7 billion in dirty digital money has passed through the app since its inception in 2019. But that figure has been disputed – blockchain data firm Elliptic said in one report, of the $7.6 billion that passed through the app, only $1.5 billion came from illegal activities.

The politicians critical prohibition and a professor from Johns Hopkins University job an “archive fork” of Tornado Cash source code to GitHub for research purposes.

An anonymous troll even went as far as send ethereum celebrities from a Tornado Cash wallet shortly after the blacklisting. The later government said it would “not prioritize enforcement” against those who received “unsolicited and nominal” amounts of tainted crypto.

And this month, Coinbase, the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, finance a lawsuit against the US Treasury Department for the ban.

Tornado Cash is one of many “parts mixers”, applications that anonymize cryptographic transactions. These tools are popular with those who want privacy when using digital assets, like someone sending funds to support a cause in Ukraine, for example.

Many cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, are pseudonymous but not anonymous – no one’s identity is recorded on the blockchain but every transaction is.

Tornado Cash is used for transactions on Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
