Passwordless is the future; Apple, Google and Microsoft to roll out FIDO passkey technology

Passwords are easily accessible. One reason why a growing number of tech companies have introduced two-factor authorization for login. And now, in a joint effort to make the web more secure and usable for everyone, Apple, Google and Microsoft plan to expand support for a common passwordless login standard that was created by the Alliance FIDO and the World Wide Web Consortium.

Passwordless authentication is a form of multi-factor authentication that replaces the password with a secure alternative.

Whether logging into a social media account, mobile banking, or our workplace, all of our online accounts require a username and password. Since creating a new, different password for each type of account is kind of a challenge, most of us end up reusing passwords from one account to another. According to a study by the Ponemon Institute, people reuse an average of five total passwords, both work and personal. This means that a single compromised password can create a chain reaction of liability. This joint effort between the technology majors will provide customers with faster, easier and more secure connections to websites and apps across devices and platforms.

While password managers and older forms of two-factor authentication offer incremental improvements, there has been industry-wide collaboration to create more convenient and secure login technology. According to information available on the FIDO Alliance, the extended standards-based capabilities will give websites and apps the ability to offer an end-to-end passwordless option. Users will log in with the same action they take multiple times a day to unlock their devices, such as a simple fingerprint or face verification, or device PIN. This new approach protects against phishing and the connection will be radically more secure compared to passwords and legacy multi-factor technologies such as one-time passcodes sent by SMS.

“Just as we design our products to be intuitive and powerful, we also design them to be private and secure. Working with the industry to establish new, more secure login methods that provide better protection and eliminate password vulnerabilities is at the heart of our commitment to creating products that provide maximum security and a seamless user experience – all in an effort to keep users’ personal information safe,” said Kurt Knight, senior director of platform product marketing at Apple.

“The complete shift to a passwordless world will start with consumers making it a natural part of their lives. Any viable solution must be more secure, simpler and faster than passwords and old authentication methods. factors used today,” says Alex Simons, vice president of identity program management at Microsoft. Offering passwordless login expertise to its employees and businesses, in September of last year, Microsoft allowed consumers to completely remove their Microsoft account password.

Apple, Google, and Microsoft led the development of this expanded feature set and are now building support into their respective platforms.

In addition to facilitating a better user experience, the broad support for this standards-based approach will allow service providers to offer FIDO credentials without the need for passwords as an alternative method of login or account recovery. . These new features are expected to be available on Apple, Google, and Microsoft platforms over the coming year.

“Pervasiveness and ease-of-use are key to seeing multi-factor authentication widely adopted, and we applaud Apple, Google, and Microsoft for helping to make that goal a reality by committing to supporting this user-friendly innovation in their platforms and products,” said Andrew. Shikiar, Executive Director and CMO of the FIDO Alliance. “This new capability should usher in a new wave of low-friction FIDO implementations alongside the continued and growing use of security keys, giving service providers a full range of options to deploy modern, phishing-resistant authentication.” , he added.
